A Look at Dental Health and the Brain with Our Cosmetic Dentist Beverly Hills

Every single year more studies are being released that portray some of the major connections between oral health and issues with one’s brain.  While we do not fully understand all of the connections between oral health and a healthy brain, it is no time to slack off of daily oral hygiene habits and regular trips to our Beverly Hills dentist.

Much of this research is still being conducted by the Center for Disease Control, the Harvard School of Public Health, and the Columbia University Medical Center.  With surveys and tests being conducted on tens of thousands of patients, the irrefutable evidence is not quite there but there is an increase in links between these conditions every single day.

The focus of this research generally is not on any single issue with oral health.  Many of the studies group dozens of issues including loss of teeth, damaged teeth, oral lesions, and almost every other injury or disease that can be found in the mouth.  Even so, periodontal disease ranging from mild gingivitis to severe gum disease has put up surprising numbers for multiple diseases in the brain and mental conditions.

The closest link currently seems to be some of the bacteria that excess plaque on the teeth can produce.  These germs, once in the bloodstream, can wreak havoc on almost every organ in the body.  Not only have links been made to coronary issues, those with periodontal disease are also at a much higher risk for dementia, Alzheimer’s, and even common memory loss and cognitive ability.

While missing an appointment with our Beverly Hills cosmetic dentist or forgetting to brush a few times is not going to cause you to forget where you put your keys, the links between oral health and the rest of the body are astounding.
